Easy way to test package building from source on Ubuntu 16.04

I want to test a package and build it with different compilation options, the thing is re-building this package over and over seems a bit uncomfortable, I haven't done anything like this before but I think there are flexible and efficient ways to do this .. Any suggestions?
By the way, I'm using CMake and the package is in python and C++ code.
