Finding content within an html table using cucumber

I am in a software engineering course for college and right now we are working on TDD with ruby on rails and cucumber. My team and I have run into a serious halt however because We are not able to get cucumber to find any content on our page. The way we designed it is that we have one view for our app and we switch through 1 page with buttons that show and hide tables. You can see what we have for now here http://ift.tt/2nkqqgH. The problem is when we search for content in cucumber using expect(page).to have_content("stuff") it wont find anything except the main page title and page.has_content?('stuff') always returns true. we are stuck and cannot move on in testing until we pass this hurdle, so any help is appreciated
