Is is a good idea to use Javascript for test automation for both Front-End and Back-End?

For the project, the UI uses ReactJS and the backend api uses Java.

I'm creating test automation with the goal that the developers will be able to write test cases themselves as well. I'm trying to decide which stack to use. The lead developer told me that not all of the developers know Java, but all know Javascript.

I have never used Javascript for automation. Is Javascript a good idea for both UI (selenium) and API testing? And maybe other type of back-end testing?
