How to write java tests for API?

My team has been thinking to implement api tests using java.Can someone recommend how to get started using say for example Google Calendar api? How do i start writing the code in java, how can i get the authentication sorted for accessing the google api? https://developers.google.com/calendar/v3/reference/

Any pointers for this would be really helpful as i am quite new to this.
