Which is the best way to make tests in a Java Android project? [closed]

I have a big Android application (in Java) that was not be tested. Now I want to write some tests in order to improve the code.

What is the best practice that I should follow in this situation?

I have started to write some basic Unit tests but I don't think that is the optimal way to improve the application code.
