Running test cafe scripts for multilingual web application

I have a multilingual web application. Can you please suggest how to write scripts ex: for assertions or typetext which supports for German/French. If I type text in french and put the assertions, it is working as expected. But if we fetch the data which exists already, it is not comparing as expected. It is reading as special characters like '?' etc. PLease suggest when ever we are doing tests for multilingual , do we have to do any additional settings ?
