Distinct namespace for testing

I saw two approaches to namespacing regarding testing. Some use the same namespace to test and others have the test classes all inside a testing namespace (often called "Tests", go figure...).

Is it better to have this kind of distinct namespace? Is it necessary? Or is it simply a personal preference up to the programmer?
