Apache/LAMP stress testing

For a college project we set up a LAMP/Apache web server with a monitoring service. Now we want to stress test it (with LOIC and jMeter). We have no idea what the standards are when it comes to testing. We have searched the internet and found nothing.

What are the usual limits of stress testing a standard apache web server?
