Writing functional automation test cases using C# in Visual Studio Professional version

I am trying to automate a web based WPF application with C# in Visual Studio 2017 Professional version (Which does not coded UI). But this approach involves lot of C# scripting knowledge. I am just in beginning phase. Is my approach correct? Is there any tool that can be leveraged for WPF applications (open source). The testing involves UI and database validations also.
