How can I mock syscalls on linux?

In one particular case I want to write test for sql query that uses current_date function.

But it's a general problem. Usually it's possible to mock stuff inside the language you're using especially if it's a dynamic one. But what if I want to mock data for external program, like in this case?

I'm super user and it's for testing purposes, surely this must be possible, right?
