Why do we need a Selenium Grid plugin?

There is this plugin for Jenkins.

However, I don't really see the benefit of this. Why can't I have my own Selenium Grid and run my tests directly instead of a plugin? Is this not supported somehow?

Let's say that my project invokes a hub with 2 nodes (outside of Jenkins), and I build this project with Jenkins. Will it not work?
