What is the difference between $httpBackend.flush and $httpBackend.verifyNoOutstandingExpectation?

And also $httpBackend.verifyNoOutstandingRequest? Are the latter two even necessary sometimes? I've been able to get my ajax unit tests to work with just flush, but I still don't have a exact clear picture of what all of these do in Angular testing.
