High level automated function verification test on whole application, before automated testing?

As part of the continuous deployment process I'm now beginning to wonder if it would be better to run a high level FVT first across whole application after a new build (testing core features work) before going deeper? If core features broke, missing, don't open etc abort rebuild until they do.

Is this efficient?
