Python starts plotting random numbers on "import test"

I'm using a python (2.7.13) package that in turn does import test. After some debugging I found that when importing test (and consequently when importing the package I'm using) in a jupyter notebook, it just starts to plot random (or at least seemingly random) points (huge number of plots with one data point in each). In terminal, the import statement takes a ridiculous amount of time (no plots shown but I'm assuming the import statement is doing the same thing and I'm only seeing the plots because I have inline plotting turned on in Jupyter notebook). This used to work fine a week ago. Any idea what might be causing this?
