Test environment for mobile Apps

I read a few things about test environment for apps but I still have some concerns. There are some literature saying, that the test environment can be split in device-based, emulator-based, cloud-based and crowd-based. But other literature are saying, that the Backends are the test environment.

Now what? I hope someone will clarify it
