How do I really write a unit test?

I look at examples and they have mathematical test which makes perfect sense to me but as a jr. dev at work I can't seem to abstract how to test classes properly when functionality is something beyond testing algebra.

What am I missing ? I want to really get great at Tdd and bdd.
