Best practise in state machines testing

I have been programing an embedded software in C++. The core of the application layer is a state machine. I have implemented it and now I have been thinking about testing. I have been looking for some robust testing method. Can anybody give me an advice what is the best practise for testing the state machines? Thanks for any ideas.
