UI testing of VCL Applicationsm: How to apply the Robot Framework to this?

I have a VCL (a UI framework for Windows applications that implements its own components) application I'd like to automate UI testing for. I've had some success with pywinauto, I am looking at Robot Framework now but there are distinct challenges with menu items selection in particular and in other areas where VCL deviates from the standard WinForms or WPF model.

I haven't found anything yet, so I want to ask openly if anyone has experience with UI test automation with VCL based applications and whether they succeeded in applying Robot Framework to that?
