Why are automated tests for selenium usually ran inside a virtual machine or docker container?

So, I've recently started looking into testing and everywhere people recommend to run tests inside some kind of VM or docker container. But What's the reason for this? Why can't I just run the tests with a headless parameter? Do I gain anything by having it inside a virtual environment?
