How to automate test if an API is triggered in a website for particular events

For testing purposem,I want to automate the following scenarios: In a website on performing actions on some template/widget ,certain API's are triggered and data is sent back to database.I can test that by using the network tab and keeping a record of the data in excel. What I want is to automate the process, such that I can check if the API is being generated on the actions and also store/generate data report. Is there any opensource library/tools for this? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
