How do I do a White-box testing in C?

Does assert testings belongs to white box testing or block box testing? How do I a unit testing in c?

I was being taught that we can use the assert statements to test functions, what if the function doesn't return anything? how can we test that? do we have functions that are similar to assert so that we can test?
