What is the proper way to stage, test and launch opencart?

I have a running e-commerce site based on opencart. Now that I want to install a new theme and make few changes, I want to do it separately, perhaps in a subdomain. And when the test is done, I want it to replace the existing one.

What is the proper way of doing it?
