Maven process tests in it/ as well as test/

So I'm in the process of migrating our build. The build is very large and the dependencies complex so I need to be able to do it piece meal. I'm moving all of the integration tests from it/ to test/ for reasons I'll not get into. It's the sort of thing that leaves a bad taste in your mouth but still needs doing. The question is, how to do it and still have things run when they are supposed to in the interim? Clearly I need an exclusion so that ITCase items don't run while Unit tests are running but I'll also need tests to run if they are in it/ or if they are not, then /test, as previously mentioned. One problem to consider is that it/ may not exist if the tests have already been moved. Any ideas? Examples?
