what should be best practices to be fallowed for efficient performance testing

I am beginner in performance testing using the jmeter tool.Can you please help me with the best guidelines i need to fallow when performing load testing. There are so much material available which cannot be consumed all together so i am confused which one should be fallowed to start with.
