Selenium IDE working and errors in mozila ADD-ONs

I am internee at software testing and given the task to search about Selenium IDE. I have few questions about it,

1. What is the main purpose of using selenium

2. If I am recording and action in IDE it goes well but when I play the test case it gives the error, reason?
