Android Exerciser Monkey won't launch

I am trying to test my android app using the Exerciser Monkey feature, following the docs I have to navigate using a terminal window to the folder: platform-tools and issue the command, but I receive the following error:

Vargas-iMac:platform-tools vedtam$ $ adb shell monkey -p foto.studio -v 500
-bash: $: command not found

I would appreciate any advice, I could not find any info about this issue around here. Thanks
