Benefit of Protractor (or mocha etc.) over action recording tools like Selenium IDE

I am automating some apps for learning purposes. A friend of mine told me that all your efforts are invain. AS there are tools that record actions of user and generate test cases according to it. I am not sure what should I do, Can anyone tell which one is the best for test automation and WHY? Will be thankful
