Pointers to consider while developing test automation framework

I have decided to develop an automation framework for server side for an eCommerce site. To keep check on the Numerous changes that are occurring as part of the Dev cycle. I have deciding using TestNG , But would like some pointers on what things i should consider before starting the design.
